Basement Bathroom

Looking to add a bathroom to your basement? Nice! Well, here is a guide to help you, including benefits, pricing, and more.

About Basement Bathrooms

Here's a tip. If you have a single floor, 2-3 bed, 1 bath home or condo, and if you have a basement that has available space, you should use some of that space to put in a second bathroom. Basement bathrooms are typically less expensive than adding an addition to a home to make room for a bathroom.

Designing a Basement Bathroom
When it comes to designing a basement bathroom, you first need to think about (1) Layout and (2) Fixtures. These will influence your budget most dramatically, especially the available square footage you have. A "full" path would include a toilet, sink, and tub with shower. A three-quarter bath would include a toilet, sink, and stand-up shower rather than a tub. Which should you go with? Well, this will partly be determined by understanding what drainage options are available to you with your upper level sewage system and local building codes. These will influence the shower/bath decision and even the type of toilet you can use. For example, pressure-assisted toilets, sewage-ejector toilets, or up-flushing toilets toilets, rather than traditional gravity based plumbing systems are sometimes preferred. But, a G.C. and plumber will know best.

Key Considerations:
  • A new bathroom must at minimum be 36-40 sq ft.
  • 5’ x 8’ is a common dimension.
  • Give attention to lighting. Basements can be dark and lack natural light. Remember that.
  • Cost: the average basement bathroom addition will cost (on average) between $10,000-$15,000
    • Dependent on size, proximity to existing plumbing, quality of finishes, labor, among other factors
    • Building under an existing bathroom on the ground level will save time and money
